Wayne Dalton Garage Door Spring Replacement

Are you experiencing issues with your Wayne Dalton garage door, particularly struggling to open or close it smoothly? One common culprit could be a faulty torsion or extension spring. Replacing these springs is crucial to ensure the safe and efficient operation of your garage door.

Before attempting any repairs, ensure you have the necessary tools and safety gear, including gloves, safety glasses, and a sturdy ladder. Refer to your garage door's user manual for specific safety precautions and spring replacement instructions.

Identifying the Spring Type

Wayne Dalton garage doors typically utilize either torsion or extension springs. Torsion springs are mounted above the door opening, while extension springs run parallel to the door tracks. Determine the type of spring your garage door has to proceed with the correct replacement process.

Safety Precautions

Garage door springs are under immense tension and can be dangerous if handled improperly. Before removing the old spring, ensure the door is closed and supported by blocks or clamps. Never attempt to open the door manually with a broken spring.

Torsion Spring Replacement

1. Release Tension: Locate the center shaft and disconnect the torsion spring from the winding cone by removing the retaining pin. Use a winding bar to gradually release the tension on the spring.

2. Remove Old Spring: Once the tension is released, unhook one end of the spring from the bracket and slide it off the shaft. Repeat on the other side.

3. Install New Spring: Position the new spring onto the shaft, ensuring the winding is facing the correct direction. Hook one end of the spring onto the bracket and gradually wind it up using a winding bar.

4. Tension Adjustment: Check the door's balance by manually lifting it about halfway up. If it opens or closes too quickly, adjust the spring tension accordingly.

Extension Spring Replacement

1. Safety First: Secure the door with clamps or blocks and disconnect the door opener to prevent accidental movement.

2. Remove Tension: Locate the pulleys and disconnect the spring from the eyebolts using a socket wrench.

3. Remove Old Spring: Unhook the spring from the pulley and slide it out of the mounting bracket. Repeat on the other side.

4. Install New Spring: Position the new spring onto the mounting bracket and hook it onto the pulley. Ensure the spring is properly seated and secure.

5. Tension Adjustment: Adjust the spring tension by turning the eyebolts clockwise to increase tension or counterclockwise to decrease it. Ensure the door is balanced when lifted manually.

Lubrication and Maintenance

After replacing the springs, lubricate all moving parts, including the hinges, rollers, and tracks, to ensure smooth operation. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and inspecting the door, can help prevent future issues.
