Installing a 240v Outlet in a Garage

Upgrading your garage with a 240-volt outlet is a straightforward electrical project that opens up a range of possibilities.   • 10/3 or 10/4 non-metallic (NM) electrical cable

  • Wire strippers
  • Screwdriver

1. Determine the Location

2. Run the Cable

Run the 10/3 or 10/4 NM cable from the electrical panel to the junction box. Make sure the cable is secured with cable staples or straps every 12 inches.

3. Install the Junction Box

Mount the junction box at the desired location using screws. Connect the NM cable to the junction box.

4. Wire the Outlet

Connect the wires from the NM cable to the appropriate terminals on the outlet. For a NEMA 14-50 outlet, connect the black wire to the brass terminal, the white wire to the silver terminal, and the green wire to the green ground terminal. For a NEMA 6-50 outlet, connect the red wire to the brass terminal, the black wire to the brass terminal, the white wire to the silver terminal, and the green wire to the green ground terminal.

5. Install the Outlet

Place the outlet into the junction box and secure it with screws.

6. Turn on the Power

Return to the electrical panel and turn on the circuit breaker associated with the new outlet. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the outlet is energized.
