Install A Garage Door Spring
Replacing a garage door spring is a serious task that could be dangerous if not done properly. If you aren't sure of your ability to do the work yourself, you should hire a professional garage door repair technician.
Safety First: Before you begin working on your garage door, disconnect the door from the electric opener. You can do this by pulling the emergency release cord that is usually located near the center of the door.
Tools you will need:
- New garage door spring
- Socket wrench
- Screwdriver
- Locking pliers
- Wrench
- Hammer
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Find the Center of the Spring
Locate the center of the spring by measuring from one end of the spring to the other. Mark the center with a piece of tape.
Step 2: Remove the Old Spring
Using a socket wrench, loosen the nuts that hold the spring in place. Be careful not to drop the spring, as it is under a lot of tension. Once the nuts are loose, you can remove the spring.
Step 3: Install the New Spring
Place the new spring on the door in the same position as the old spring. Secure the spring with the nuts and bolts.
Step 4: Adjust the Tension
To adjust the tension on the spring, turn the adjusting nut clockwise to increase tension or counterclockwise to decrease tension. The correct tension will depend on the weight of your garage door.
Step 5: Reconnect the Door
Once the spring is installed and adjusted, you can reconnect the door to the electric opener. Pull the emergency release cord to engage the opener.
Step 6: Test the Door
To test the door, open and close it several times. Make sure that the door opens and closes smoothly and that there are no strange noises.
Tips:
- If you are replacing a torsion spring, it is important to use a spring that is the same size and type as the old spring.
- Be sure to wear safety glasses when working on your garage door.
- If you are not comfortable working on your garage door, you should hire a professional garage door repair technician.
