How to Rewind Garage Door Spring

A garage door spring is a vital part of the door's opening and closing mechanism. It helps to lift the door and balance its weight. However, over time, the spring can become worn or damaged and need to be replaced. If you're handy and have some basic tools, you can rewind a garage door spring yourself. Here's the step-by-step guide:

Materials You'll Need:

  • New garage door spring
  • Winding bars
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

Safety Precautions:

Garage door springs are under a lot of tension, so it's important to take safety precautions when working with them. Always wear gloves and safety glasses. Never attempt to rewind a spring without using winding bars.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials and Tools

Before you begin rewinding the spring, gather all the necessary materials and tools. You'll need a new garage door spring, winding bars, gloves, and safety glasses.

Step 2: Disconnect the Garage Door

To begin, you'll need to disconnect the garage door from the opener. To do this, pull the release cord and lift the door until it's fully open. Then, disconnect the power to the opener.

Step 3: Identify the Spring

Next, identify the spring that needs to be rewound. It will be located either on the side or above the door. Once you've identified the spring, make sure it's not under any tension.

Step 4: Remove the Spring

To remove the spring, you'll need to use winding bars. Insert the winding bars into the holes on either side of the spring. Turn the bars in opposite directions to loosen the spring. Continue turning the bars until the spring is completely loose.

Step 5: Install the New Spring

Once the old spring is removed, you can install the new spring. To do this, insert one end of the spring into the hole on the side of the door. Then, use the winding bars to wind the spring up. Be sure to wind the spring in the same direction as the old spring.

Step 6: Adjust the Tension

Once the spring is rewound, you'll need to adjust the tension. To do this, turn the winding bars in opposite directions to tighten or loosen the spring. The spring should be tight enough to lift the door but not so tight that it's difficult to open.

Step 7: Reconnect the Garage Door

Once the spring is adjusted, you can reconnect the garage door. To do this, lift the door until it's fully open. Then, reconnect the power to the opener and pull the release cord to close the door.

Step 8: Test the Garage Door

Finally, test the garage door to make sure it's working properly. Open and close the door several times to make sure it's operating smoothly and without any noise.
