How to Replace Garage Door Springs

Step 1: Safety First

Before you begin working on your garage door springs, it's important to take some safety precautions. Wear safety glasses and work gloves to protect yourself from flying debris. Make sure the garage door is closed and the power is turned off at the breaker panel.

Step 2: Remove the Old Springs

Locate the springs on either side of the garage door. The springs are typically attached to the top of the door and to the frame of the garage. Use a socket wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the springs in place. Be careful not to remove the nuts completely, as the springs are under tension. Once the nuts are loose, use a pair of pliers to carefully remove the springs from the door and the frame. Be sure to support the weight of the door as you remove the springs.

Step 3: Install the New Springs

Take one of the new springs and attach it to the top of the garage door. Use a socket wrench to tighten the nut that holds the spring in place. Be sure to tighten the nut securely, but do not overtighten it. Next, attach the other end of the spring to the frame of the garage. Again, use a socket wrench to tighten the nut that holds the spring in place.

Step 4: Adjust the Tension

Once the new springs are installed, you need to adjust the tension so that the door opens and closes smoothly. To adjust the tension, use an adjustable wrench to turn the adjustment screw on the end of the spring. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the tension and counterclockwise to decrease the tension. Be sure to test the door after each adjustment to make sure that it opens and closes smoothly.

Step 5: Clean Up

Once the springs are installed and adjusted, clean up any debris that may have fallen during the process. Be sure to dispose of the old springs properly.
