How To Replace Garage Door Keypad

Garage door keypads are a convenient way to open and close your garage door without having to use a key or remote control. They are especially useful if you have multiple people who need to access your garage, or if you frequently lose your keys. Replacing a garage door keypad is a relatively simple process that can be completed in a few hours.

Tools and Materials

New garage door keypad
Screwdriver
Wire strippers
Electrical tape
Drill (optional)

Safety Precautions

Before you begin, disconnect the power to your garage door opener. This will prevent you from accidentally electrocuting yourself. You should also wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from any sharp edges.

Instructions

Locate the existing garage door keypad. It is usually mounted on the outside of your garage door, near the door opener.
Remove the screws that hold the keypad in place. There are usually two or three screws, located on the sides or bottom of the keypad.
Disconnect the wires from the keypad. There are usually two or three wires, which are connected to the terminals on the back of the keypad. Use wire strippers to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each wire.
Connect the wires from the new keypad to the terminals on the back of the keypad. Make sure that the wires are connected to the correct terminals. The terminals are usually labeled with the letters "C", "NO", and "NC".
Wrap the electrical tape around the connections to secure them.
Mount the new keypad in place. Use the screws that you removed in step 2 to secure the keypad to the wall.
Reconnect the power to your garage door opener.
Test the new keypad to make sure that it works properly.

Tips

If you are not comfortable working with electrical wires, you can hire a qualified electrician to replace your garage door keypad.
If you have a newer garage door opener, it may have a built-in keypad. In this case, you will not need to install a separate keypad.
You can purchase a garage door keypad with a variety of features, such as a backlit display, a built-in motion sensor, or a security code.
