Installing a Garage Door Weather Seal
A garage door weather seal effectively prevents moisture, dust, and pests from entering your garage. Not only does this enhance comfort levels, but it also boosts energy efficiency and extends the life of your door. Installing a weather seal is a relatively simple process that can be completed in a few hours. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a seamless installation.
Gather Necessary Materials
Before starting, gather the following items:
- Garage door weather seal kit
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Drill with screwdriver bit
- Hammer
- Level
Measure and Cut the Seal
Start by measuring the length of the bottom of your garage door. Cut the weather seal to this length using scissors. Measure and cut a 45-degree angle on each end of the seal to ensure a snug fit at the corners.
Drill Pilot Holes
Along the length of the seal, drill pilot holes approximately 1 inch apart. These holes will guide the screws that will secure the seal to the door.
Position and Secure the Seal
Align the weather seal with the bottom edge of the garage door. Ensure that the seal is positioned flush against the door and that the angled ends fit snugly at the corners. Use the screws to secure the seal through the pilot holes. Drive the screws in until they are flush with the surface of the seal.
Attach the Bulb Seal for the Top and Sides
If your weather seal kit includes a bulb seal, this is for the top and sides of the door. The bulb seal creates a tight seal against the door frame and jambs. Clean the surfaces where the seal will be attached using rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Peel off the backing paper from the seal and firmly press it into place. Use a level to ensure that it is straight. Cut off any excess seal that extends beyond the door frame or jambs.
Test the Seal
Once all seals are installed, test their effectiveness by closing the garage door and looking for any gaps or areas where light or air can enter. If necessary, adjust the seals to ensure a tight fit.
