How To Change Torsion Spring On Garage Door

Torsion springs are a crucial component of garage doors, counterbalancing the weight of the door and making it easier to lift. Over time, these springs can wear out and need to be replaced to ensure the smooth and safe operation of your garage door.

Safety First

Before you begin any work on your garage door, it's essential to ensure safety. Disconnect the garage door opener, unplug the door from the power outlet, and engage the manual release mechanism to prevent accidental movement of the door.

Materials and Tools Required

* Replacement torsion spring(s) * Torsion spring winding bar * Socket wrench and sockets * Adjustable wrench * C-clamps * Hacksaw * Safety glasses

Steps to Replace Torsion Spring

1.

Locate and Measure the Old Spring:

Determine the type and size of the torsion spring(s) you need to replace. Refer to the original spring or consult the garage door manufacturer's manual for specifications. 2.

Remove the Tension:

Using the winding bar, rotate the spring counterclockwise to release tension. Continue winding until all tension is relieved. 3.

Disconnect the Cables:

Disconnect the cables from the spring by removing the bolts or pins securing them. Note the position of the cables for reinstallation later. 4.

Remove the Spring:

Once the cables are disconnected, carefully remove the old spring from the shaft. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts holding the spring in place. 5.

Cut and Install the New Spring:

Cut the new spring to the same length as the old one. Place the spring on the shaft and tighten the nuts to secure it. 6.

Reconnect the Cables:

Reattach the cables to the new spring, ensuring they are positioned correctly. Tighten the bolts or pins to secure the cables. 7.

Wind the New Spring:

Using the winding bar, rotate the spring clockwise to wind it. Wind until the spring has approximately the same tension as the old spring. 8.

Adjust the Tension:

Adjust the tension of the spring by tightening or loosening the nuts on the spring. The door should balance properly when lifted halfway, without excessive resistance or falling freely. 9.

Reattach the Opener:

Reconnect the garage door opener and power to the door. Test the operation of the door by opening and closing it a few times.

Tips for Success

* Always wear safety glasses when working on torsion springs. * Use a sturdy ladder or work platform for stability. * If you are not comfortable working with torsion springs, it is recommended to contact a qualified garage door professional. * Inspect the springs regularly and replace them as needed to avoid potential hazards. * Lubricate the door's moving parts periodically to ensure smooth operation.
