How To Build Shelves Garage

Garage shelves are a great way to organize and store your belongings, freeing up valuable floor space. They can be used to store everything from tools and equipment to seasonal items and sports gear. Building garage shelves is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend with minimal tools and materials.

Materials:

Plywood (3/4-inch or 1/2-inch thickness)
2x4 lumber (for framing)
Wood screws (2-inch and 3-inch)
Wood glue
Clamps
Level
Tape measure
Pencil

Tools:

Circular saw or miter saw
Drill
Countersink bit
Hammer

Instructions:

1. Plan your shelves. Determine the size and location of your shelves based on the items you need to store. Sketch a diagram of your shelves on paper to help you visualize the layout. 2. Cut the plywood. Cut the plywood to the desired size for your shelves. If you are using 3/4-inch plywood, cut the shelves to the following dimensions: width = length of the shelf + 3 inches, depth = depth of the shelf + 1 inch. If you are using 1/2-inch plywood, cut the shelves to the following dimensions: width = length of the shelf + 2 inches, depth = depth of the shelf + 1/2 inch. 3. Build the frames. Cut the 2x4 lumber to the following dimensions: length = width of the shelf, quantity = 2. For the sides of the shelves, cut the 2x4 lumber to the following dimensions: length = depth of the shelf + 1 inch, quantity = 2. Assemble the frames by attaching the sides to the top and bottom pieces using wood screws. Countersink the screws so that they are flush with the surface of the wood. 4. Attach the plywood to the frames. Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the inside of the frames and press the plywood shelves into place. Secure the shelves with wood screws, driving them through the plywood and into the frames. Countersink the screws as before. 5. Install the shelves. Determine the location of your shelves on the wall and mark the stud locations with a pencil. Use a level to make sure the shelves are level, and then secure them to the wall using screws that are long enough to penetrate the studs. 6. Add finishing touches. If desired, you can paint or stain the shelves to match your garage décor. You can also add shelf liners to protect the shelves from scratches and spills.
