Garage Door Will Not Go Up: Troubleshooting and Repairs

A garage door that won't open can be a major inconvenience. Fortunately, many common causes of this problem can be easily diagnosed and repaired. Check out these troubleshooting tips to get your garage door up and running again.

Check the Power

Make sure the garage door opener has power. Check if the outlet is working by plugging in another device. If the outlet is not working, reset the circuit breaker or fuse that controls it. If the opener has a battery backup, make sure the batteries are charged or replaced.

Inspect the Remote Control

Ensure the remote control has fresh batteries. If the batteries are new, try reprogramming the remote to the door opener. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific steps.

Examine the Sensors

Two sensors, one on each side of the door, are responsible for detecting when the door is closed. If one or both sensors are obstructed, misaligned, or damaged, the door will not open. Check if there is any debris blocking the sensors. Align the sensors by adjusting the brackets they are mounted on. Replace any damaged sensors.

Inspect the Tracks and Rollers

The garage door moves up and down on tracks with the help of rollers. Inspect the tracks for any obstructions or debris. Clean the tracks and rollers with a damp cloth. If any rollers are broken or damaged, they need to be replaced.

Check the Springs

Two types of springs, torsion springs and extension springs, counterbalance the weight of the garage door. Broken or worn springs can prevent the door from opening. Check for any cracks, rust, or deformation on the springs. Replace any damaged springs as they can be dangerous if not handled properly.

Inspect the Door Balance

Disconnect the garage door opener and manually lift the door halfway up. If the door stays in place, it is balanced properly. If it falls back down, one of the springs is likely weak or broken. Adjust the spring tension accordingly.

Inspect the Opener

If all else fails, there may be an issue with the garage door opener itself. Check if the opener is making any unusual noises or if the motor is overheating. Reset the opener by disconnecting it from power for a few minutes and then reconnecting it. If the problem persists, contact a qualified technician for further assistance.
