How to Measure Torsion Springs for Garage Door

Torsion springs are essential components of garage doors, responsible for counterbalancing the weight of the door and making it easy to lift and lower. When a torsion spring breaks or wears out, it can affect the functionality of the door, making it difficult or even impossible to operate. Replacing a torsion spring is a relatively simple task, but it's important to measure the spring correctly to ensure a proper fit and functionality.

Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools

Before you begin, gather the following tools:

  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Spring winder (optional)
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Step 2: Identify the Torsion Spring

Locate the torsion spring assemblies mounted above the garage door opening. These assemblies consist of a metal shaft with two springs wound around it. The springs are usually painted black or galvanized.

Step 3: Measure the Inner Diameter (ID)

Using the tape measure or ruler, measure the inner diameter (ID) of the spring. The ID is the distance between the inside edges of the spring coils.

Step 4: Measure the Wire Diameter (WD)

Measure the diameter of the wire used to make the spring. This is known as the wire diameter (WD). Use a caliper or micrometer for more precise measurements.

Step 5: Measure the Length (L)

Measure the length of the spring (L) from one end to the other. This measurement should include the coils and the end hooks.

Step 6: Count the Number of Coils (N)

Count the number of coils in the spring. This number (N) will be used to calculate the spring rate.

Step 7: Determine the Spring Rate (k)

The spring rate (k) is a measure of how stiff or soft a spring is. It is calculated using the following formula:

k = 8 * WD^4 * N / (ID^3 * L)

Where:

  • k = spring rate in pounds per foot (lbs/ft)
  • WD = wire diameter in inches
  • N = number of coils
  • ID = inner diameter in inches
  • L = length in inches

The spring rate is important for determining the correct replacement spring. A spring with a higher spring rate will be stiffer and able to handle more weight, while a spring with a lower spring rate will be softer and easier to lift.

Tips:

Wear safety glasses and gloves when handling torsion springs.

Use a spring winder to make the removal and installation of the spring easier.
