How To Replace A Garage Door Sensor
Garage door sensors are an important safety feature that helps prevent the door from closing on people or objects. If a sensor is damaged or misaligned, it can cause the door to malfunction. Replacing a garage door sensor is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes.
Tools and materials you will need:
- New garage door sensor
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Safety first
Before you begin, put on safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris. Disconnect the power to the garage door opener at the circuit breaker panel. This will prevent the door from accidentally closing while you are working.
Step 2: Locate the sensor
The garage door sensors are usually located on either side of the door, about 6 inches above the ground. They are small, white boxes with a wire coming out of them.
Step 3: Remove the old sensor
Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the sensor in place. Once the screws are removed, carefully pull the sensor away from the wall.
Step 4: Install the new sensor
Position the new sensor in the same location as the old sensor. Use the screws to secure the sensor to the wall. Be sure to tighten the screws securely.
Step 5: Connect the wires
Connect the wires from the new sensor to the wires from the garage door opener. The wires are usually color-coded, so it is easy to match them up. Twist the wires together and secure them with a wire nut.
Step 6: Test the sensor
Turn the power back on to the garage door opener. The door should now open and close properly. To test the sensor, place an object in the path of the door. The door should stop closing when it hits the object.
Step 7: Clean up
Once you have tested the sensor, clean up any debris that may have been created during the installation. Dispose of the old sensor properly.
