How To Prep Garage Floor For Epoxy

Before you can apply epoxy to your garage floor, you need to properly prepare the surface. This involves cleaning the floor, removing any grease or oil stains, and repairing any cracks or holes. Once the floor is clean and dry, you can start applying the epoxy.

Materials You Will Need

  • Stiff broom or push broom
  • Degreaser or TSP cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Scrub brush
  • Water hose
  • Squeegee
  • Concrete patch or crack filler
  • Trowel or putty knife
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • Instructions

    1.

    Clean the floor

Sweep the floor to remove any loose dirt or debris. Then, mix a solution of degreaser or TSP cleaner with water in a bucket. Scrub the floor with the solution using a scrub brush. Rinse the floor thoroughly with water and squeegee it dry. 2.

    Repair any cracks or holes

If there are any cracks or holes in the floor, you will need to repair them before applying the epoxy. For small cracks, you can use a concrete patch or crack filler. For larger cracks or holes, you may need to use a concrete repair kit. 3.

    Sand the floor (optional)

If the floor is smooth, you may not need to sand it. However, if the floor is rough or uneven, you may want to sand it to create a smooth surface for the epoxy to adhere to. 4.

    Clean the floor again

Once you have repaired any cracks or holes and sanded the floor (if necessary), you will need to clean the floor again. Sweep the floor to remove any loose dust or debris. Then, mop the floor with a cleaner specifically designed for concrete. Rinse the floor thoroughly with water and squeegee it dry. 5.

    Apply the epoxy

Once the floor is clean and dry, you can start applying the epoxy. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the epoxy. Be sure to apply the epoxy in thin, even coats. Allow the epoxy to dry completely before using the floor.

    Tips

  • Make sure the floor is completely dry before applying the epoxy. If the floor is not dry, the epoxy will not adhere properly.
  • Apply the epoxy in a well-ventilated area. The fumes from the epoxy can be harmful if inhaled.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection when applying the epoxy.
  • Allow the epoxy to dry completely before using the floor. This may take several days.
