How To Change A Garage Door Opener Code

Garage door openers provide convenience and security to your home. However, if you lose your remote or need to give access to someone else, you'll need to know how to change the garage door opener code. The process is relatively simple and can be done in a few minutes.

Step 1: Locate the Learn Button

The first step is to locate the learn button on your garage door opener. This button is typically found on the motor unit itself, either on the front or side. It may be labeled with a light or have a small symbol that resembles a radio wave. If you can't find the learn button, consult your garage door opener's manual for its specific location.

Step 2: Press the Learn Button

Once you've found the learn button, press and hold it for a few seconds. You should see a light on the opener start to flash or blink. This indicates that the opener is ready to learn a new code.

Step 3: Press the Button on Your Remote

While the light is flashing, press the button on the remote that you want to add. Hold the button down until the light on the opener stops flashing and stays solid. This indicates that the opener has successfully learned the new code.

Step 4: Repeat for Additional Remotes

If you have multiple remotes that you want to use with the garage door opener, repeat steps 2 and 3 for each remote. Make sure to press a different button on each remote so that each button has its own unique code.

Step 5: Test the New Code

Once you've programmed all of the remotes that you want to use, test the new code by pressing the buttons on the remotes. The garage door should open and close as expected. If the door doesn't respond, check to make sure that the remotes are properly programmed and that the batteries are fresh.

Step 6: Clear the Existing Code (Optional)

If you want to clear the existing code from the garage door opener, you can do so by pressing and holding the learn button for about 10 seconds. The light on the opener will flash rapidly to indicate that the code has been cleared. You will then need to reprogram all of the remotes that you want to use with the garage door opener.

Tips

  • Make sure that the remote you're using is compatible with your garage door opener. Different types of openers use different frequencies, so not all remotes will work with all openers.
  • If you're having trouble programming your remote, consult your garage door opener's manual for specific instructions. Different models may have slightly different programming procedures.
  • If you've lost your remote or it has been stolen, you can purchase a new one from the manufacturer of your garage door opener. You will need to provide the model number of your opener when ordering a new remote.
